Here are so guidelines for prepping your wall for your painting project.

Move the furniture and protect the fixtures

You should always assume that the paint will spill so be prepared and don’t take chances and move your furniture out from the room if possible but if it is not possible, you could move all furniture at the center to be covered with plastic before doing the proper painting. Outlet covers should be removed because it will not look good if it is covered with paint, same as for the cover plates of your lighting and switches. For pendant lights and ceiling fan, you could cover it also with plastic to avoid spills and paint drop all over it. Also, do not forget the doorknobs and other door hardware. You could use small plastic and secure it with painter’s tape or you can apply painter’s tape directly into it.

Repair imperfections

Check your walls for imperfection and do something about it before the final process of painting. Paint rolls don’t usually run smoothly on the wall that is not even and as a result, you will have to polish it later to have a beautiful result. If you ever find flaking paint, you must scrape it off with a knife.

If you have small holes on your wall, you have to patch it. Apply spackling product using a putty knife, make it smooth and let it dry. Once it is dry, you have to sand the area to make it smooth and then apply primer in that area.

For bigger holes, repair it with a patch kit, do not leave these imperfections for your paint will not cover it when these imperfections are not resolved. It will only highlight these imperfections when painted.

Clean the walls

Dirt on your wall will only result to visible imperfection when painted leaving you uneven paint color in your final product. You could remove dirt using vacuum in moldings and baseboards and use a damp towel in the whole wall. If you are painting your kitchen, grease and other food deposits might be sticking on the wall and you might need to use soapy water to remove these food splatters before you do the painting.

Tape

If your wall is already dry, apply painter’s tape around the trim and if possible, use longer pieces of tape because those shorter pieces will possibly create gap that will enable the paint to leak through. After putting a tape, just press its edge to your trim in order for it to stick firmly.
